An Active Harmonic Filter is most common application reducing harmonic pollution within electrical installations, helps ensure ‘clean’ current. An active harmonic filter requires a stable external power source to inject phase opposite current harmonics to downstream loads. Dependent on the stability of the connected external power source, its efficiency will vary. The proliferation of electronic switching devices increase in the amount of harmonic pollution in the electrical distribution systems, the harmonic currents may overload the equipment and cables, resulting in (energy) losses and unnecessary heating of cables and components, temperature buildup resulting in a fire.
Active harmonic filters, as known as active power filter is an excellent harmonic filter correction units. provides best-in-class performance including dynamic harmonic mitigation and power factor correction, to eliminate irregular harmonics caused by nonlinear loads. It adopts DFT detection algorithm technology, and precise calculates each order harmonic current, through intelligent control, injecting reactive current into the power distribution system to remove damaging harmonic currents and cancel out the load harmonics. Therefore, the problems of low system power factor, large harmonic current and high voltage distortion rate are solved, the system stability is improved and power factor improvement.
Due to the increasing usage of non-linear loads such as VFDs, harmonics are being introduced into the power grid which is contributing to poor power quality and leads to overheating of equipment and nuisance faults. AHF not only eliminates harmonic current from the load side, but it also mitigates harmonic voltage caused by harmonic currents. The AHF system can also improve power factor (PF) and correct load imbalances in the power system.
AHF adopts a modular design, Usually, AHF can be composed of one or more AHF modules and an optional LCD panel. Each AHF module is an independent harmonic filtering system, and the user can change the rating of the harmonic filtering system by adding or removing AHF modules.
According to the different mounting type, it can be divided into: Modular AHF and Wall-mounted AHF
Modular AHF
Modular AHF can be embedded in AHF cabinets, containing circuit breakers, cable segments, surge protection devices, and LCD panels, etc. Modules in the cabinet are available, up to 12 AHF modules can be placed in parallel. It is used in textile industry, foundry industry, automobile industry and other industries.
Wall-mounted AHF
Wall-mounted AHF can be installed on a wall, which is suitable for low rating applications, and all-mounted AHF according to customer requirements.
Active Harmonic Filters are connected in parallel with the loads to be compensated. They measure the current of the non-linear load and inject the same harmonics, but with opposite phase angle. The current of the active harmonic filter thus cancels out the harmonic currents of the load, and only fundamental frequency current component is left to be supplied from the power system.
In addition to current and voltage profile smoothing by harmonic current mitigation, the active filters also provide fast fundamental frequency reactive power compensation and balance loads in three-phase systems. Reactive power compensation stabilizes voltage, mitigates flicker, releases additional capacity for transferring more active power in the existing electrical network and improves the power factor. Fast response to reactive power changes is important.
